How did you get involved in the Foundation?

I have known the Cesta family since fifth grade, when I became friends with Julie. Julie was the first person to teach me anything about VWD! When I was 16, I became interested in pursuing a career in the medical field and then decided to join the Youth Staff when I turned 18 after I graduated high school.

What are your career plans?

Currently, I am a first-year medical student at the Dr. Kiran Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. I aim to graduate and pursue an Ob/Gyn or General Surgery residency.

How do you think your experiences with the Foundation will affect how you practice medicine?

I think some of the most critical components of medicine are patient-centered care and patient advocacy. Working with the Foundation has allowed me to see firsthand the benefits of supportive provider-patient relationships. Being able to work at six conferences has taught me the importance of educating patients and allowing patients to have a space where their voices can be heard while forming connections with other patients and providers. VWD Connect has shifted my understanding of medicine and the type of physician I hope to be: one who is attentive to making meaningful connections with patients.

Any hobbies? Pets?

I love going to the beach, spending time with my family, and traveling when I can. Recently I moved from Boston to Ft. Lauderdale and have loved exploring new restaurants and places in South Florida. My family has two giant South African Mastiffs, Kali and Koda.

What is your favorite Conference memory?

Organizing and preparing the materials for the Period Symposium in 2019 was a lot of fun, and I am very passionate about women’s health.

What would you say to someone thinking of becoming a staff member?

I am extremely proud to be a staff member of the Foundation, and grateful to be part of an organization that has such a unique and positive impact on patients and their families. I highly recommend joining the Foundation’s Staff! (Sam’s brother and sister took her advice and are now also Staff Members!)
